Wellbutrin and Drugs for Cancer
There are many drugs that can interact with Wellbutrin. Wellbutrin drug interactions can cause your body to metabolize the medications differently from the intended effects and alter the levels of some drugs in your blood, among other things, that is why it is of primary importance to consult your doctor if you take other drugs simultaneously.
In particular, if you suffer from cancer diseases and you are prescribed Cyclophosphamide (Cytoxan, Neosar), then you should be more careful about your health state. It is believed that cyclophosphamide may interact with Wellbutrin, though there have been no reports of such an interaction in actual patients.
There is, however, evidence of possible effects of this interaction of drugs based on the experiment the medical researchers have conducted which has proved that cyclophosphamide may increase the plasma concentrations of bupropion. The people who took Wellbutrin and Cyclophosphamide at the same time could experience potential symptoms of bupropion toxicity such as agitation, anxiety, tremor, insomnia, and seizures, or neuropsychiatric symptoms such as delusions, hallucinations, psychosis, impaired concentration, paranoia, and confusion.
Thus, if you are taking cyclophosphamide and Wellbutrin together, your healthcare provider may need to monitor you more closely and may need to adjust your doses of these medications.
One more hot point to keep in mind if you are a female diagnosed with breast cancer and you combine your cancer medications with Wellbutrin. A special study devoted to the interaction of Wellbutrin and cancer diseases was carried out to determine whether or not bupropion extended release (Wellbutrin XLTM) is useful in lessening the symptoms of depression in women with breast cancer. The reason for conducting this research with bupropion extended release (Wellbutrin XLTM) was that bupropion has a lower likelihood of causing the side effects of weight gain, sexual dysfunction, and fatigue, which may be important for women with breast cancer and may even have a beneficial effect on these symptoms. The research found out that Wellbutrin did not cause certain side effects when taken alone.
However, if you are prescribed Tamoxifen for prevention of breast cancer, then you should not take Wellbutrin, as it may cause a lot of side effects such as hot flashes, swollen fingers and ankles, and total fatigue. So, Tamoxifen and Wellbutrin are not recommended together, but there is a number of drugs that work well with Tamoxifen.
In any way, you should consult the doctor before taking these drugs together with Wellbutrin as it may cause certain side effects depending on an individual state of health.
